We are all busy!
I have two jobs, two kittens and fortunately only one "better half" that take up a huge portion of my time. On top of that I need to find time to exercise, watch my favourite TV programmes (currently Empire, Apprentice and Homeland) and get some sleep.
So finding time to cook healthy tasty food, you may think, would be a hard task...
However I use these 7 tips to help save time:
1) Plan Your Meals
Plan your meals is simple but should be your number one priority. Why not chose a set meal for each day of the week
Monday could be Keralan Rasam night (get the recipe here)
Tuesday could be Pesto and Creme Fraiche Chicken
And so on (get more recipes from here
Having the same meal plan for each day takes the stress out of deciding what to eat (and stress can make you fat)
And what's more, as you only eat each meal once every 7 days you don't get bored of them. And if you do just sub out that one meal!
2) Learn a few meals well
Following on from the last point, learn 4-5 meals really well. That way you can go and prepare them without thinking.
Each week when I publish new recipes try the ones that you really want to, Don't try them all cause you feel you have to. Practice makes perfect and decreases the time taken to prep!
3) Get the right gear!
Most people will buy new trainers to help in the gym but not new kit to help in the kitchen! There are a few things that will make your life soooo much easier if you get them. A decent blender is essential, a sharp proper kitchen knife, a spice rack, scissors, and even equipment such as a slow cooker or a George Foreman are all huge time savers in the kitchen
4) Batch Cook
Don't just cook for that meal, cook loads! You can eat leftovers for breakfast or lunch the next day, or freeze to have a later date! The same goes for salads, or fruit salads. When you have one day spare, chop them up stick them in a bowl or Tupperware and whack them in the fridge. This cuts back loads on your time!
5) Invest In A Slow Cooker
If you don’t have one, get one. Such an essential piece of kitchen kit. It not only saves time but also makes any dish taste absolutely amazing, meat just melts in your mouth after a few hours in one of these bad boys. To save even more time you can prepare the ingredients the night before, add them to the slow cooker dish and place that it in the fridge. In the morning remove from the fridge and allow it to raise to room temperature (if you put the cold dish straight on it will crack) and then switch it on as you head off to work. You will come home to the most amazing aromas in your kitchen and a mouth watering dish that’s ready when you are.
6) Be proactive with your time in the evening
Simple one here but have your lunch tupperware ready next to your dinner plate and simply box up lunch as you dish up dinner. That’s lunch sorted and it will you going back for seconds aiding portion control too. You can even chop up ingredients for the morning omelette, beat the eggs etc, or premake your smoothies, all to save time when you are up getting ready for work
I always put my smoothie ingredients in the cup the night before if I am up early, then all I need to do is blend and go! Gives me 5 more minutes in bed which we all crave!
7) Keep The Kitchen Clean, Tidy and Ready To Go
And here's the one I'm going to try! Have water in the bowl so you can wash up as you go! No-one (especially my fiancée) likes a dirty kitchen so keeping it clean as you go saves time the next night!
This tips aren't rocket science, but they save you HEAPS of time!
And make sticking to your healthy eating SOOO much easier!
