You must have seen the media frenzy about sugar recently (well every day it seems) Well sugar is getting a bad press again! But is it justified? And how easy is it to actually reduce your sugar intake? Is SUGAR really making you FAT?
The World Health Organisation (WHO) have recently stated that refined sugar is the main reason why we are getting fat, not just fat, but obese! And i'd have to agree! If you look at anthropology, we have NEVER been overweight as a species UNTIL we began eating sugary, processed food as the majority of our diet!

Sugar is 100% needed in our diets, but nowhere need the level we currently eat them. Putting it very simply, sugar raises insulin, insulin is a hormone that will try and remove the sugar from the blood in to the cells. If the liver and muscle stores are full (as they are for most people who don't train to a high intensity or who don't train at all) insulin will place the sugar in to fat cells. Ie you will put on fat and weight! Insulin management and sugar reduction is needed for most people!

But how easy is it?

I am going to give you two examples of hidden sugar in two commonly consumed products

First weight loss shakes....

I am not here to name and shame companies, or belittle anyone who sells (or uses them) I just want to stick to facts, let's look at the ingredients for one of them
Picture
In the ingredients list, which is listed in order of abundance, we see in the first 6 ingredients maltodextrin, dextrose and fructose

These are all sugars

So out of the 6 most abundant ingredients, 50% of them are sugar!!

(Oh there is also honey further down the list too, that's pure sugar as well)

And this is sold as a weight loss product! Now can you see why it is so hard? Clever marketing from certain companies make it hard to resist in a quest to lose weight but hiding sugar under alternative names is downright sneaky!

And when WHO are telling us we need to reduce sugar to lose weight, we hit a brick wall when the weight loss products are full of sugar!

The second product is water! Yep water has hidden sugar in too.... the next label is taken from a vitamin water and contains a whopping 21g of sugar, 23% of the daily intake recommendation. By the way that's the current guideline. If the WHO get their way (hands together praying) It will be almost half the intake in one bottle of WATER! So it's easier said than done to reduce sugar. Especially when it's hidden in weight loss shakes and water!

The debate about sugar is going to rage on! But instead of focusing to much on it let's look at a better way of eating that will help you lose weight. Well two specifically!

1. JERFing (Just Eat Real Food) - nothing fancy in this, but high sugary foods aren't abundant in natural forms, except fruit. If you just ensured all your food comes from actually food, such as animals, fruit, vegetables. From the sea, sky, land or ground. Not a factory, not man made. You will dramatically decrease your sugar intake and help your waist line!

2. High protein diet - protein is the building blocks of life, it makes our muscles that help us look nice and toned, it provides the building blocks for all the hormones that help you burn fat too! But we chronically are protein deficient! We need to introduce more meat, nuts, seeds, fish, eggs and dairy in to our diets and this will accelerate fat burning! And guess what all those foods are examples of, JERF!

And this is the plan that we follow in our Fat3 programme! We take your existing diet and make the changes to decrease sugar, increase protein, get more real food in to your daily intake!
